Blade Runner 2049 Lighting Match
Lighting Match
The final rendered image was based off the Las Vegas scene from 2017 movie Blade Runner 2049 and the work of cinematorgrapher Roger Deakins. The goal of this project was to create a camera in 3D space that best matched the origianl footage. The camera needed to be placed the correct distance from the objects in the scene and have to same focal length as the origianl scene. Using perspective lines, a list of focal lengths used during filming and a top down floor plan of the building where the scene was shot, I was able to create an accurate camera in which I could create the rest of the project from. The floor plan that I referenced can be seen below.
After I modeled the assets to match the reference photo below, I then started to work on matching the lighting. The shaders and textures for this scene were simple, most of the beauty in the shot comes from the intricacies of the building and the saturated lights. I modeled a sky light to allow the orange HDRI to come through from the top, as well as through the class seen at the foacl point of the image. I then added another overhead light to add the additional yellow tone to the room, as well as a light to illuminate the outer room.
Software used: Maya, Arnold, Substance Painter, Nuke, and Photoshop
Responsible for all assets, excluding the human figure, accquired from Adobe Miximo.
Reference Image: Las Vegas scene from Blade Runner 2049.
Mapped out perspective lines, used to create a 3D camera with the correct focal length to match the reference scene.

Additional Reference Images:
The Las Vegas scene in Blade Runner 2049 was filmed in the Budapest Stock Exchange Palace (https://www.atlasofwonders.com/2017/10/blade-runner-2049-filming-locations.html). The website for the building (http://exchangepalace.com/#:~:text=Originally%20built%20in%201905%20to,television%20station%20MTV%20since%201955.) displays images of the exterior and interior of the building and there is also access to the floor plan of the building. I used these references to figure out the size of the room, to model it correctly. I was able to use this to place the camera accurately in the 3D scene and establish the a possible focal length used in filming this scene.
